Around the Lake

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Bayfield, and Big Manitou Falls, Pattison State Park near Superior, ranked first and second, respectively, on the Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s list of Seven Natural Wonders of Wisconsin. Other wonders are Cave of the Mounds; Sandstone Bluffs, Devil’s Lake State Park; Eagle River Chain O’Lakes; Niagara Escarpment, High Cliff State Park; and Horicon Marsh.

The Port of Duluth ranked first along with the Port of Mobile, Alabama, in the Railway Industrial Clearance Association’s Top 10 Ports. In two categories, evaluating facilities and overall service, Duluth ranked first.

Joe Bodewes and sons Will, 14, Luke, 12, and Noah, 10, of Hazelhurst, Wisconsin, made a 72-day, 1,600-mile kayak trip around Lake Superior to raise money for HIV-positive children in Tanzania. They set out from Black River Harbor, Michigan, in May and finished August 8, reports the Daily Globe of Ironwood, Michigan. After early rough weather, they finished with 30 days of paddling and no other weather breaks.
