For outstanding contributions to storytelling, Virginia Hirsch, founder and owner of Bayfield Heritage Tours in Bayfield, received the Lucy Beck Memorial Award at the Wisconsin Storytellers Get-Together September 24 in Green Lake, Wisconsin.

The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum in Hayward has been named one of the Seven Manmade Wonders of Wisconsin by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. “Mark this on the list of museums that are anything but stuffy,” says the agency, noting the giant musky that’s 4-1/2 stories tall, with an observation platform in its mouth.

Michigan Technological University in Houghton moved up in rankings of the top universities in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2012 edition of “Best Colleges.” It’s listed at 15 – up from 117 in 2011 – a spot it shares with Washington State University, Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

History Notes

Dec. 12, 1875: The schooner Stranger, carrying provisions to Grand Marais, Minnesota, is lost in a storm despite rescue attempts.

Dec. 14, 1989: Coast Guard cutter Mesquite runs aground off Keweenaw Peninsula; vessel is a loss and later is scuttled for diver visitation.

Jan. 13, 1908: The first meeting of the Superior Historical Society held in the public library in Superior.

Jan. 16, 1961: Mrs. Inez McCuaig, the first woman elected to the council in Schreiber, Ontario, is sworn into office.
