In its category of General Interest magazines with circulations under 60,000, Lake Superior Magazine got Gold Awards for Feature Article with the story “A Sauna on St. Ignace,” by Chris Gibbs and for Feature Design on the same article, done with photos by Chris Gibbs and designed by Art Director Randy Bauer. The other two Gold Awards were for Profile Article with “Nuturing Creative Spirits,” a profile of the Grand Marais Arts Colony by Ada Igoe and Technical Article with “Icons of the North Woods,” by Cheryl Lyn Dybas.
In several categories, the magazine also competed with General Interest magazines of over 60,000 circulation. It won a Silver Award for its Website – www.LakeSuperior.com, and was the smallest circulation publication among the winners. Experience Life earned the Gold and Minnesota Monthly the Bronze. Lake Superior Magazine earned a Bronze in Overall Design, for which Minnesota Monthly won Gold and Experience Life won Silver.
The remaining awards, all in the category of General Interest magazines under 60,000 circulation, were:
• Silver for Single-Topic Issue: “Choosing the Lake” (February/March 2011)
• Silver for Feature Article: “River Revival: Renewed Life Along the St. Louis” by Konnie LeMay
• Silver for Feature Design: “Rock, Pebble, Sand” designed by Randy Bauer
• Silver for Spread Design: “Icons of the North Woods” designed by Randy Bauer
• Silver for Technical Article: “Winds on the Water” by Leslie Askwith.
• Bronze for How-To Article: “Biggest Bang for … ” home remodeling series by Konnie LeMay and David Hafferty
• Bronze for Profile Article: “Wintering on the Island” by Madelaine Karwoski
• Bronze for Spread Design: “Nuturing Creative Spirits” designed by Randy Bauer
