Lake Superior Magazine
Names Winners of
Sixth Annual Photo Contest
Winners
have been named in the Sixth Annual Lake Superior Magazine Photo
Contest. The honored competition garnered nearly 1,000 photographs from
more than 140 photographers, high quality images of Lake Superior area
scenes. Winning photos are published in the newest edition of Lake Superior
Magazine,
February/March 2001.
“On Lake Superior, beauty is a circular thing - one finds beauty all around
the circle of the lake,” says Paul Hayden, editor of the magazine. “Once
again this year's photo contest confirms this truth as stunning shots were
submitted portraying places, people and spectacular moments everywhere
along, near or in Lake Superior. The pictures selected as best are displayed
in a stunning 6-page photo feature in our February/March 2001 issue.”
The judging was done by the editorial and design staff of Lake Superior
Magazine. Hayden says, “As always, the quality of the entries was high.
It shows again that professional photographers are not the only people
with an eye to what makes Lake Superior one of the most enticing bodies
of water on earth."
The Grand Prize winner is Joel Cooper
of Wawa, Ontario, with his color photo of "Fall Storm at Old Woman Bay,"
a dramatic stormy sea in Lake Superior Provincial Park. Joel earns a $250
travel package for use within the Lake Superior region.
Jennifer L. Dougall of Baxter, Minnesota, won First
Place (color division) for her “Damselfly in Morning Dew.” First
Place (black-and-white division) went to Larry Campbell of
St. Cloud, Minnesota, for “Sturgeon River Falls, Upper Michigan.” Both
winners receive a $50 gift certificate for Lake Superior Collection products,
a subscription to the magazine and a 2001 Lake Superior Calendar.
Second prize winners Brian Thomson,
Superior, Wisconsin (color division) for “Feeding Frenzy at Canal Park,
Duluth” and Ben Carrasca, Duluth, Minnesota (black-and-white division)
for “Serene Place in Duluth's Rose Garden” both receive a subscription
and calendar.
The cover of the new issue displays an Honorable
Mention photo “Winter Entry” by Ben Carrasca. There were
eight other Honorable Mention award winners:
Larry Campbell, St.
Cloud, Minnesota; Rhonda Howell, Greenfield, Indiana; Carlyn
Iverson, Eagan, Minnesota; Bill Rogers, Rochester, Minnesota;
Delroy
J. Shane, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; Mark Smyk, Thunder Bay,
Ontario; Karen Snider, De Pere, Wisconsin; and Bev Spratte,

“Choosing the final few to feature was a deliciously difficult task for
our judges. We definitely want to thank all who participated in our contest,”
Hayden says. “The seventh annual photography contest will commence later
this year, so everyone will want to watch for details.”
The February/March 2001 issue of Lake Superior Magazine containing
