Lake Superior Magazine
Names Winners of
Seventh Annual Photo Contest

Feb./Mar. 2002Winners have been named in the Seventh Annual Lake Superior Magazine Photo Contest. The honored competition garnered more than 1,000 photographs from 150 photographers, high quality images of Lake Superior area scenes. Winning photos are published in the newest edition of Lake Superior Magazine, February/March 2002.

“As the contest grows - now in its seventh year - the judging doesn't get any easier with so many beautiful images capturing the lives and places of the lake,” says Konnie LeMay, editor of the magazine. “With just the photo or slide (no place or photographer names), judges tried to narrow to an impossible few the choices of those with the best photographic quality and composition. Some are fresh looks on familier places; some freeze a wonderful moment in 'lake time.'"

The pictures selected as best are displayed in a stunning 7-page photo feature in the February/March 2002 issue. The judging was done by the editorial and design staff of Lake Superior Magazine.

The Grand Prize winner is Bill Rogers of Rochester, Minnesota, with his color photo of "Lighthouse Moon," a full moon over the entry light at the Duluth Pier. Bill earns a $250 travel package for use within the Lake Superior region.

John Hughes III of Storm Lake, Iowa, won First Place for his "Four Tugs" in Duluth Harbor. He will receive a prize of $150 that includes a gift certificate for Lake Superior Collection products.

Second prize winner Susan Dykstra, Thunder Bay, Ontario, will receive a prize valued at $50 for "The Lion's Head" near Silver Islet, Ontario.

The cover of the new issue displays a first-time award for Cover Winner, a photo by Kristen Theisen of Maple Grove, Minnesota, entitled "Harbor Pals" in Grand Marais, Minnesota. The prize is valued at $175.

There were two Honorable Mention awards for the Cover Winner prize: "Grand Marais Moon" by Darrell Tangen, Savage, Minnesota, and "Beached Boat on Whitefish Bay" by Ruth Klein, Pewamo, Michigan.

Seven additional Honorable Mention awards were given to Duane Bridgeman, Wyoming, Minnesota; Regina M. Driscoll, St. Paul, Minnesota; Thomas Eling, Duluth, Minnesota; Travis Novitsky, Grand Portage, Minnesota; Ronald J. Polomski, Pinckney, Michigan; Jill Tell, North Branch, Minnesota; and Ward VanGuilder of Fernley, Nevada.

The February/March 2002 issue of Lake Superior Magazine containing the prize winning entries is available at better magazine and book stores across the country or from the publisher at 1-888-BIG LAKE (244-5253). Images of the winners can be viewed at the magazine’s website: www.lakesuperior.com
