Duluth, Minnesota - January 15, 2002
The
publishers of Lake Superior Magazine have tallied the votes to discover
where readers of Lake Superior Travel Guide like to visit when traveling
around Lake Superior. This nationally recognized list, gleaned from the
ballots to the guide’s annual Reader Field Report program, ranks the new
2002
Lake Superior’s Best. In addition to the top
10 Destinations, the list includes, for the first time, the top 5 Individual
Attractions around the lake.
For the 15th year running, the top spot is again claimed by the Minnesota’s
Lake
Superior north shore. It has held that position since our polling began.
Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands/Bayfield makes a dramatic jump from
4th to 2nd position, reversing positions with the Duluth, Minnesota/Superior,
Wisconsin area and leaving Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula in
3rd place. These three areas always jockey for the spots near the top.
Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore/Munising moves up to
5th, and newcomer Copper Harbor, Michigan, takes over 6th. Grand Marais,
Minnesota, has recovered a bit from last year (9th), moving back to
7th this year.
The twin Sault Ste. Maries (Ontario and Michigan) held on to 8th
place and Isle Royale National Park (Michigan) has reappeared on
the chart at 9th. Thunder Bay, Ontario, rounds out the Top 10 Destinations.
New this year is the addition of a Top 5 Attractions list, individual locations
that have proven most popular in the voting. Minnesota has four in the
top five list. Great Lakes Aquarium (Duluth) takes 1st position,
followed by Split Rock Lighthouse (Two Harbors). Another lighthouse,
Whitefish
Point Lighthouse and Museum in Michigan, gleans 3rd place. Two Minnesota
resorts take the final two positions: Bluefin Bay Resort in Tofte
in 4th and Cove Point Resort in Beaver Bay in 5th. In future years,
this list will prove to be most interesting.
The 2002 lists are revealed in a 136-page sourcebook for travel around
