Lake Superior Magazine
Announces Top Picks of its
Eighth Annual Amateur Photo Contest

Feb./Mar. 2003A vigilant, lonely view of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse in Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, earned the Grand Prize in the 8th Annual Lake Superior Magazine Amateur Photo Contest. A dozen of the top shots - including the four prize winners - are featured in the February/March issue of the magazine on newsstands everywhere.

Nearly 175 entries with about 1,000 images were judged this year, with spectacular compositions rivaling “professional” work. Besides entries from Ontario, Michigan, Minnesota and wisconsin - the state and province bordering Lake Superior - submissions came from other states like Iowa, Tennessee, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, showing the draw to the lake region. Judging is done without reference to photo titles, photographers or specific locations.

The Grand Prize winner depicted a stunning portrait of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse at Isle Royale National Park taken by Mike Gudowski of Crystal, Minnesota.

“Mike's picture embodies the vastness of the lake through the isolation of the Rock of Ages lighthouse as well as the mystical quality of Lake Superior,” says the magazine's editor Konnie LeMay. “The range of entries spanned all of the lake and the life around it, from a heron in mid-flight to the wisp of a Michigan waterfall to an awe-inspiring shot above Tee Harbour in Ontario that shows the incredible vista compared to the small figure of a visitor sitting on a rock.”

Other winners in the contest were First Place for "Heron in the Harbor” by Eugene Rajanen of Duluth, Minnesota, and two Second Place Winners, “For Sale Fresh Fish” by Joe Kandiko of Chaska, Minnesota, and “View from Mt. Oberg by Jeff Gangelhoff of Burnsville, Minnesota.

All prize winners get a 2003 Lake Superior Calendar and a year's subscription to Lake Superior Magazine. In addition, the Grand Prize earns a $200 travel package at businesses around Lake Superior and First Place receives a $50 gift certificate for Lake Superior collection products.

There were eight Honorable Mention awards, given to Ken Aker, Superior, Wisconsin; Katrine Anderson, Duluth, Minnesota; Duane Bridgeman, Wyoming, Minnesota; Susan Dykstra, Thunder Bay, Ontario; Jeanette Gladstone, Eaton Rapids, Michigan; Janet Karon, Duluth, Minnesota; Ronald J. Polomski, Pinckney, Michigan; and Eugene Rajanen, Duluth, Minnesota.

The February/March 2003 issue of Lake Superior Magazine containing the prize winning entries is available at better magazine and book stores across the country or from the publisher at 1-888-BIG LAKE (244-5253). Images of the winners can be viewed at the magazine’s website: www.lakesuperior.com
