Lake Superior Magazine rubbed pages with the likes of the New Yorker, National Geographic, Atlantic Monthly, Newsweek, Time and Vanity Fair on the 50 Best Magazines 2005 list published today, June 23, in the Chicago Tribune’s Tempo section.

The annual list is complied by the staff of the newspaper’s Tempo section as their favorite picks and includes off-beat and smaller publications like HELLO! and Whole Dog Journal among the big name magazines.

“Wow! What a tickle for us to be noticed among all of the magazines crossing the desks of the Chicago Tribune staff,” says Editor Konnie LeMay. “It was also a treat because one of our readers gave us the word about the list, asking if we’d seen the newspaper and sending her and her husband’s congratulations. Our readers are like family in that way. That’s what makes doing the magazine fun.”

In the listing for the regional magazine, the Chicago Tribune article said: “Lake Superior Magazine. If cactus and arid deserts take your breath away, it’s not for you. On the other hand, if pine woods, birch and cold lakes are what you’re about, Lake Superior Magazine should be on your reading list. From Duluth to Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay to Grand Marais, the magazine covers everything from restaurants to lodging to travel ideas to best fishing holes and more. Lake Superior touts itself as ‘the magazine about the world’s largest fresh-water lake and the people who visit and live there,” and that pretty much sums it up.’”

The June/July issue of Lake Superior Magazine currently on the newsstands features a story about 100 years of Duluth’s Aerial Bridge, a northern Ontario fishing story by an award-winning Canadian outdoor writer, a look at nostalgic vacations and the summer Lake Superior Lodging and Restaurants Guide among its articles.

On the Chicago Tribune list, the first magazine was the music publication Blender and Lake Superior Magazine just made the list at No. 50. “Thank goodness that the newspaper staff didn’t stop at the Top 49,” LeMay joked. “Perhaps we’ll move up on the list next year. For now, I’m just happy we made the cut.”

Lake Superior Magazine, a full-color consumer publication, is printed six times a year in Duluth, Minnesota. Publisher Cindy Hayden and Associate Publisher Paul Hayden are a wife-and-husband team. Co-owner of the magazine is Jim Marshall, Cindy’s father, making it truly a family-run publication.
