U.P. Makes Top 10 Summer Destinations

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has made a Top 10 destination list not just of Michigan, not just of the United States, but of the whole world.
The U.P. is being touted as a Top 10 summer destination by ShermansTravel.com.
It’s listed as No. 10 along with some pretty heavy hitters. Here’s the list:
1. The island of Capri in Italy.
2. The Hamptons.
3. Greek Islands, in particular, Santorini and Mykonos.
4. London.
5. Montreal.
6. National Parks, in particular, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park.
7. New England.
8. Russia.
9. Scandinavia.
10. The Upper Peninsula, Michigan.
The ShermansTravel.com Website says this about the U.P.:
“If city living gets too hot, pack up some marshmallows, hot dogs and camping gear and head to the refreshing Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where majestic wildlife unspoiled rivers, waterfalls and dense forests abound. Blessed with some 1,700 miles of shoreline along three of the Great Lakes - Superior, Michigan and Huron - it should come as no surprise that fishing, canoeing and camping are prime activities here, with moose, bears and beavers as common companions. The region’s strong Native American and French Canadian heritage is experienced everywhere as well; enclaves with names like Sault Ste. Marie and bridges like the Mackinac harken back to days of the earliest settlers. You’ll probably feel like one of North America’s earliest explorers yourself as you paddle the waterways here and set up camp in the woods.”
Such international placement is good news for those drawing travelers to the region.
“We’re obviously very happy to be listed like that in any type of survey or poll, and we’re hoping it pays off greatly for the summer,” says Tom Nemacheck, executive director of Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation in Iron Mountain, Michigan.
He says that another article about five national park escapes in Cottage Living magazine included a section on Michigan’s Isle Royale, which also could get more people thinking about visiting the U.P. Most people only dream about going to Isle Royale, where tourist numbers are relatively low.
ShermansTravel says it publishes travel sales and specials, trip ideas and travel destination information. It screens and compiles “the best deals and offers” from airlines, vacation package providers, cruise lines, hotels, car rental agencies and travel agents.
