A Tasty Tribute to the Pasty
New
York has its deli sandwiches, Chicago has its pizza … but around Lake
Superior, nothing beats a pasty for local comfort food.
Lake Superior Magazine’s December/January issue
features the food that kicks pizza’s pepperonis when it comes to
filling up hungry, hard-working miners.
“A Passion for Pasties” follows the history, the hard-fought debates (with or without rutabagas and
with or without gravy) as well as the funny and fund-raising aspects of
this regional hand-holdable meal. (Pasty, by the by, rhymes with nasty,
not hasty.)
The story travels to the ranges of Michigan’s Upper
Peninsula and to Minnesota’s Iron Country. It offers different regional
recipes to try along with a few great pasty Websites to check out and
suggestions for places to buy or order pasties in such exotic locales
as Virginia, Eveleth and Duluth, Minnesota, or Laurium, Chassell and
Ontonagon, Michigan.
The December/January issue is also filled with stories
of other seasonal comforts – like a traditional holiday gathering, a
local man whose business is Christmas, a listing of seasonal family
activities all around the lake and the best bets for finding and
enjoying the northern lights.
The issue is currently available on newsstands or by ordering directly from the publisher. Lake Superior Magazine,
a full-color consumer publication, is printed six times a year in
Duluth, Minnesota. The magazine is available by subscription, at
newsstands and from the publisher’s office. For more information, call
