Traveling By Air? Everyone Needs a Passport
The U.S. government’s passport requirement for air
travel between the United States and Canada again applies to everyone
as of Oct. 1.
A huge backlog of passport applications caused the
government in early summer to announce a temporary change. It allowed
those who had applied for a passport, but had not received one, to use
a receipt to re-enter the United States via air from Canada, Mexico,
Bermuda and the Caribbean. But that ended in September.
If you’re traveling by land or water, you don’t need a
passport this year (2007) to re-enter the United States from Canada.
That boaters and motorists do not need passports although another form
of government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or a
birth certificate, is needed. Canadian citizens flying into the United
States have needed the passport starting this year and were not given
the temporary exemption.
Passport applications can be made at most post offices,
county auditor offices and other locations. To find application
locations, go to www.iafdb.travel.state.gov and type in your zip code.
This will give you a list of nearby locations with contact information
and whether you can buy a photo there, too.
