Local Book Wins National Awards
A children’s book by a local author and a local
illustrator earned Silver and Bronze awards in a first-time national
children’s book competition.
The
Moonbeam Awards, designed to honor the year’s best children's books,
authors and illustrators, are being presented for the first time this
year. The awards are organized by Independent Publisher Online and
Jenkins Group. The announcement of awards was made October 18.
Agate: What Good Is a Moose?, published by Lake
Superior Port Cities of Duluth, earned a Silver medal in the category
of Best Illustrator for Nikki Johnson, whose watercolors depict the
story of the moose with low self-esteem. The book itself, written by
Joy Morgan Dey, won a Bronze medal in the category of Best Picture Book
for All Ages.
An awards presentation will take place on Saturday,
November 3, in conjunction with the 2007 Children’s Humanities Festival
at Harold Washington Public Library in Chicago. All gold, silver and
bronze medalist books will be on display.
Agate: What Good Is a Moose? is the first
children’s book published by Lake Superior Port Cities. The first
printing of the book was in April this year and it has already gone
back to press for a third time.
Agate the moose is a a big brown galoot who doesn’t
think he’s very special when he compares himself to his animal friends
named after gemstones. “What good is a moose?” he asks himself. His
beautiful friends help him to see that, just like his namesake the
agate, true beauty comes from what’s inside.
Besides the book, Lake Superior Port Cities has published a poster of the characters in the book.
