Local Book Wins National Awards

A children’s book by a local author and a local illustrator earned Silver and Bronze awards in a first-time national children’s book competition.
Moonbeam AwardsThe Moonbeam Awards, designed to honor the year’s best children's books, authors and illustrators, are being presented for the first time this year. The awards are organized by Independent Publisher Online and Jenkins Group. The announcement of awards was made October 18.
Agate: What Good Is a Moose?, published by Lake Superior Port Cities of Duluth, earned a Silver medal in the category of Best Illustrator for Nikki Johnson, whose watercolors depict the story of the moose with low self-esteem. The book itself, written by Joy Morgan Dey, won a Bronze medal in the category of Best Picture Book for All Ages.
Agate, What Good Is a Moose?An awards presentation will take place on Saturday, November 3, in conjunction with the 2007 Children’s Humanities Festival at Harold Washington Public Library in Chicago. All gold, silver and bronze medalist books will be on display.
Agate: What Good Is a Moose? is the first children’s book published by Lake Superior Port Cities. The first printing of the book was in April this year and it has already gone back to press for a third time.
Agate the moose is a a big brown galoot who doesn’t think he’s very special when he compares himself to his animal friends named after gemstones. “What good is a moose?” he asks himself. His beautiful friends help him to see that, just like his namesake the agate, true beauty comes from what’s inside.
Besides the book, Lake Superior Port Cities has published a poster of the characters in the book.
