Lake Superior water level up from last year
The total amount of water flowing, raining or melting
into Lake Superior for April was up considerably from its long-term
average water supply for that month.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that Lake
Superior’s water level rose by 6 inches in April, nearly double its
long-term average increase for April of 3 inches. However, the lake
remains below its long-term average water levels, at about 8 inches
below its average for beginning the month of May. However, it is 10
inches above what it was a year ago at this time.
Lakes Michigan and Huron basins also saw increases,
according to the U.S. Corps. The level of the Michigan-Huron basin rose
by 8 inches this April, while on average these lakes rise by 4 inches
in April. The level of lakes Michigan-Huron is now about 18 inches
below the long-term average beginning-of-May level, and unlike Lake
Superior, is 2 inches lower than it was a year ago. The levels of all
three lakes are expected to rise in May.
