Judges’ comments on IRMA winners 2009 SILVER AWARD – Reader Service Article Wintertime and the Livin’ is Freezy by Ann Treacy December/January 2008 “An utterly charming piece presented with a great deal of humor that appears to be ideally geared to the readership. Wonderfully accessible and informative.” “Excellent advice in homespun yet informative style.” “From the lead to the conclusion, the tone of this story is engaging. More importantly, it is informative, but not in the dry, fact-laden way with too many pieces like this. The reporting is deep and authoritative and still manages to be fun. And the simple ideas like keeping a house moist with plants and cooking soups are tips anyone can use. And clever, thematic subheads keep readers reading. SILVER AWARD – Environmental Feature The Swinging Pendulum by Andrew Sorensen February/March 2008 “Excellent and unusual story. The focus on the couple and their work and the complex impacts of environmental change is very involving, told in an engaging, approachable way.” “The long and volatile relationship between wolves and moose on Isle Royale is like an epic saga whose outcome remains uncertain. Strong narrative tells that story entertainingly through observation, historical references and excellent sourcing.” BRONZE AWARD – Culture Feature “Much More Than Just a Hat” by Jared Glovsky April/May 2008 “A perfect example of a topic that could have been ‘small’ in less skilled hands, here it becomes a mirror for an entire culture. Lively writing and an eye for a great story shape this into a compelling narrative studded with well-chosen anecdotes and quotes. The hat in question and those who love it are transformed into unforgettable personalities.” “Hats off to an engaging report on the origins and outreach of a cultural hit.” “Very clever idea for a story – tracing the rebirth of the Stormy Kromer hat. This feature is really about northern culture and how a piece of wearable history can live and be popular again. The writer has an eye for detail and the penchant of an historian. The functional prose services the story with its built-in arch: How one man saved an iconic hat from demise.” BRONZE AWARD – Travel Feature The Two Saults: Unlocking the Not-So-Secret Favorites by Tom Pink June/July 2008 “… strong writing and unusual places held my interest.” “Breezy pace, nice voice, confident. Useful.” |
