wins Editorial and Design Honors

Duluth, Minnesota - November 2, 2001

Lake Superior Magazine took home eight awards from the Minnesota Publishing Excellence Awards sponsored by the Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association. Judges granted three gold, two silver and three bronze awards to the magazine for stories and design.

Lake Superior Magazine received a Silver Award for Overall Excellence for General Interest Magazine with a circulation under 50,000 at the fifth annual awards, presented in Minneapolis on November 1, 2001. The magazine also earned gold awards in Best Design - Use of Visuals, Best Regular Column and Best Feature Article.

The magazine continued its run of winning awards of excellence from the MMPA. Six awards were presented to the magazine in last year’s competition.

For Best Design - Use of Visuals, the top slot gold award was given for “Voices of the Cedar” in the December/January 2001 issue of the magazine. A silver award in the same category was given to the magazine for “Double Takes” in the June/July 2001 issue. Both articles were designed by the magazine’s Art Director Matt Pawlak.

The magazine also won a gold honor for Best Regular Column for its “Around the Circle,” which appears in every issue and deals with current and breaking stories about the lake. The column is written by Editor Konnie LeMay.

The judges awarded two honors to the magazine in the Best Feature Article category. “Sailing Into History” by staff writer Hugh E. Bishop won a gold award. The story about the 25th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, this article is also a recent winner of an award for best Historical Feature from the International Regional Magazine Association. It appeared in the magazine’s October/November 2000 issue. In addition, a bronze award was given to “Flatlining with the Fish Magnate” by Tom Joseph, which appears in the April/May 2001 issue of the magazine.

In addition to the other awards, the magazine earned a bronze honor for Best Single Cover for its August/September 2000 cover design that featured a swimmer in Lake Superior taken by photographer Bill Howe. An additional bronze award was given to the magazine for Best Internet Site, which is designed by Paul Hayden.
