Lake
Superior Magazine took top honors in its division in the 2002
Minnesota Magazine and Publications Association Publishing Excellence Awards
presented recently in Minneapolis. It also won two other gold awards, two
silvers and one bronze for a total of six awards.
The magazine won the Gold Award for Overall
Excellence for general interest magazines with circulations less
than 50,000. “Very visually appealing. Wonderful photography and layouts.
Writing is warm and comfortable and targeted directly to intended audience,”
one judge wrote in a critique of the 23-year-old magazine.
The
two other Gold Awards were given to Lake Superior Magazine
for Best Internet Site at www.lakesuperior.com,
designed by Associate Publisher Paul Hayden, and for Best
Use of Visuals on its special Split Rock Lighthouse story in the
August/September 2001 issue, designed by Art Director Mathew Pawlak. That
story also earned a Silver Award for Best
Feature Article for its author, Senior Writer Hugh Bishop. “A ton
of information, interestingly presented. A great read makes me want to
go,” one judge wrote in a critique. In October, that article also earned
top honors for historical writing in an international magazine competition.
Lake
Superior Magazine’s long time columnist and co-owner, Jim Marshall,
earned a Silver Award for Best Regular Column/Department.
“The warmth and genuine style of this columnist add to the feeling and
experiences generated by these stories,” one judge wrote. The magazine’s
other owner is Publisher Cindy Hayden. Its current editor is Konnie LeMay.
In the category of Best Overall Design, the
magazine earned a Bronze Award.
Two other Duluth-based magazines in the category of Special Interest Publications
with Circulations less than 50,000 also earned honors. New Moon:
The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams won a Gold Award for Best
Single Topic Issue with its issue on 25 Beautiful Girls and a Bronze
for Overall Excellence. Cabin Life, Cabin Living earned a Gold
in that Overall Excellence category along with Gold and Silver
for Best Single Cover, Gold for Best Overall Design, Gold
and Bronze for Best Regular Column/Department; Silver for
Best Internet Site and for Best Use of Visuals.
