Lake Superior Magazine
Wins Overall Excellence Award
in Minnesota Contest

Duluth, Minnesota - November 15, 2002

Lake Superior Magazine took top honors in its division in the 2002  Minnesota Magazine and Publications Association Publishing Excellence Awards presented recently in Minneapolis. It also won two other gold awards, two silvers and one bronze for a total of six awards.

The magazine won the Gold Award for Overall Excellence for general interest magazines with circulations less than 50,000. “Very visually appealing. Wonderful photography and layouts. Writing is warm and comfortable and targeted directly to intended audience,” one judge wrote in a critique of the 23-year-old magazine.

The two other Gold Awards were given to Lake Superior Magazine for Best Internet Site at www.lakesuperior.com, designed by Associate Publisher Paul Hayden, and for Best Use of Visuals on its special Split Rock Lighthouse story in the August/September 2001 issue, designed by Art Director Mathew Pawlak. That story also earned a Silver Award for Best Feature Article for its author, Senior Writer Hugh Bishop. “A ton of information, interestingly presented. A great read makes me want to go,” one judge wrote in a critique. In October, that article also earned top honors for historical writing in an international magazine competition.

Lake Superior Magazine’s long time columnist and co-owner, Jim Marshall, earned a Silver Award for Best Regular Column/Department. “The warmth and genuine style of this columnist add to the feeling and experiences generated by these stories,” one judge wrote. The magazine’s other owner is Publisher Cindy Hayden. Its current editor is Konnie LeMay.

In the category of Best Overall Design, the magazine earned a Bronze Award
