The publishers of Lake Superior Magazine
earned six awards – including a Silver Award for Best Overall
Excellence – from the Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association
(MMPA) at a recent
Excellence Awards Gala.
The State of the Lake cover story, “Our Water Not for Sale,” earned a Gold Award for Lake Superior Magazine.

For magazines with circulations less than 60,000, Lake Superior Magazine
took both Gold and Silver in the category of Best Technical Article.
Its State of the Lake focus on “Our Water Not For Sale,” written by
editor Konnie LeMay and published in February/March 2006, won the Gold.
The Silver in Best Technical Article category went to “Wealth of the
Land,” a story focusing on the minerals that make up part of this
region’s economic and aesthetic resources and written by Gene L.
LaBerge, professor emeritus of geology at the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and George Robinson, curator of the A.E. Seaman
Mineral Museum at Michigan Technological University.
Tamara Thomsen’s photography helped to earn a Silver award for Best Use of Visuals/Photography for Lake Superior Magazine.

Lake Superior Magazine also won Silver awards for Best Use
of Visuals/Photography for a story about diving called “Going into the
Deep,” written and photographed by Tamara Thomsen with the Maritime
Preservation and Archeology Office of the Wisconsin Historical Society,
and for Best Use of Visuals/Art for the artwork of Jeff Hagen for a
story called “Go Ahead, It’s Okay to Love Winter.”
Lake Superior Travel Guide, an annually updated
mile-by-mile guide to the lake, earned a Bronze award in the category
of Best Single Topic, Special Section or Special Supplement. The newest
issue of the guide comes out with the February/March issue of Lake Superior Magazine and then is sold separately on newsstands throughout the year.
The Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association presents its Excellence Awards each November. The awards have been given out for 10 years.
