Duluth, Minnesota - March 19, 2001
After
16 years at the helm of Lake Superior Magazine’s editorial department
(that’s 91 issues and 14 Lake Superior Travel Guides for those who
are counting), Paul L. Hayden turns over his job as editor to Konnie LeMay,
who has been the magazine’s managing editor for the past three years. Hayden
becomes associate publisher.
Under LeMay’s watch, the same high standards set by the magazine for its
past 22 years will continue, Hayden and LeMay agree.
“Magazines tend to adopt some of the personality of their editors,” LeMay
says, “but we have a talented group of staff and contributors who all put
their mark on Lake Superior Magazine, from the art direction and
photography in our expansive lake scenery shots to the writing of personal
stories by those who love the lake.”
Hayden bid his editorial duties fare-thee-well in his last Editor’s Note
in the recently released April/May issue of the magazine.
“I’m not really going anywhere, but only kicking myself upstairs a bit
to Associate Publisher and shifting focus to concentrate more on our other
productions, like books and ancillary products,” Hayden writes. “While
Konnie takes over the day-to-day duties of editing the magazine, I’ll simply
sit back, occasionally cast my eyes over the office staff, drink more coffee
and search for the refill to my red pen.”
Actually,
Hayden won’t get to do much sitting back. Lake Superior Port Cities Inc.,
publisher of Lake Superior Magazine, is releasing three new book
titles this year. By summer, the publisher will produce a cookbook, Betty’s
Pies Favorite Recipes, by Betty Lessard, famous for creation of Betty’s
Pies restaurant in Two Harbors, Minn., and will release Superior Way,
Third Edition, an update to Bonnie Dahl’s essential cruising guide
to Lake Superior. Schooners, Skiffs and Steamships: Stories along Lake
Superior’s Water Trails, to be released this fall, will add a fourth
in the series of illustrated lake books by Minnesota artist/author Howard
Sivertson.
