FAQ Pride of Baltimore II
Pride of Baltimore II
is a replica of an 1812-era topsail schooner known as a Baltimore
Clipper, noteworthy for tremendous speed and ability to seemingly sail
upwind.
It is the second largest of three tall ships coming to Duluth this summer.
Launched: 1988
Length: 157 feet
Height: 107 feet with sail area of 9,708 square feet
Draft: 12 feet, 4 inches
Crew: Professional - Captain, First Mate, Second Mate, Engineer, Bosun, Cook & 6 Deckhands
Visiting crew - 6 guests (to scrub, handle sails, help in the galley and take a turn at the wheel)
Voyages: More than 200,000 miles to 200 different ports in 40 countries
Mission: To promote Maryland trade and tourism, represent the goodwill
of all Maryland’s citizens and educate visitors about the War of 1812,
including the Battle of Fort McHenry and Francis Scott Key’s writing of
“The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The original Pride of Baltimore went down in a white squall off the coast of Puerto Rico in 1986. The captain and three members of the crew were lost.
