To the casual observer, Lake Superior seems ever-changing,
so imagine the dilemma of viewing such variable scenery with the added
element of an artist’s creative energy and vision. Little wonder that creative
artists can produce works based on a single scene, yet produce widely differing
images of that theme.
One artist may capture a field of flowers by painting a single blossum,
while another sees a riot of color and activity that results in a totally
different piece of art. The creative spirit of the artists focuses differently,
but each would doubtless see truth in the work of the other - for art is
an effort to relay one’s personal vision to others in a way that expands
and intensifies the viewer’s perceptions.
The four Lake Superior artists featured in this issue differ widely in
their choice of media, style and vision, yet the influence on their work
by their surrounding environment is unmistakeable.
