It isn’t often that I
write a note to our readers, but this is a special occasion. A dream is
coming true with the opening this summer of Great Lakes Aquarium at Lake
Superior Center in Duluth.
The idea began with Julia and Caroline Marshall (no relation, unfortunately)
and, through their generosity and that of many others, including many of
you, this marvelous institution will have a beautiful new home. The state
of Minnesota, city of Duluth, Minnesota Power and many of our readers deserve
the lion’s share of recognition for this exciting accomplishment.
Every day, we look at Lake Superior, knowing that it is 10 percent of the
world’s fresh water. Recognition of Lake Superior as a valued resource
continues to grow. Lake Superior and fresh water are becoming economic,
educational and research industries unto themselves. Our publishing business
has thrived because of people like you who share our interest and values.
This magazine has been actively involved in the Great Lakes Aquarium dream
since 1989 and after all this time, I can’t wait to hear and watch the
children as they experience our new facility. I expect to hear joyous laughter
and “joy” is the word to describe my feelings.
I have had a sneak preview of the fun we are in for because Lake Superior
Center has been in the education business for many years already - 50,000
children and 2,000 teachers have already participated in the programs.
This building will educate the general public about the value of this resource
and share the knowledge being garnered through research going on all around
us.
In this issue, we are so proud to present the first of a series of articles
planned about the Aquarium (see page 32). In our August/September issue
we will commemorate the opening with a major feature.
Please plan to visit the Aquarium and experience the joy. And consider
becoming a member to help further your values through its mission. I invite
you to join me in watching this dream come true.
