The Internet seems to be alive and well, which will
come as no surprise to anyone who enjoys (or, in some cases, is frustrated
by) The Web. On a daily basis we receive requests for information about
Lake Superior, and I suppose it is only natural that with a name like Lake
Superior Magazine we are the recipient of such queries. Mostly, these
days, these are people who plan to take a trip in the region and want travel
information that is up to date and reliable. Since we’ve become a pseudo
Lake Superior Travel Bureau, we usually can provide what they are looking
for.
The Internet has invaded all of our lives, whether or not we use a computer
ourselves. It’s made Information one of our most valuable commodities.
As a result, we all seek to know more, and faster. One of the purposes
of this magazine, of course, is to provide information, but also to give
insight into the style of life that surrounds Lake Superior. Sometimes,
as with our travelers, you can only truly understand something by going
there yourself.
With the value being placed on information, the magazine has totally supported
a project during the past decade that promises to impart more knowledge
about our Great Lakes than just about any other single source. It will
be a revelation to many folks to walk through the doors of the Great Lakes
Aquarium at Lake Superior Center in Duluth, Minnesota, for there before
you will be a way actually to touch what makes this world unique - fresh
water and the resources that surround it.
In the past few issues, in this one and in our next, we are bringing you
the story of the Great Lakes Aquarium. It has been a monumental project.
Years ago, when it began, most folks figured that it would never come to
pass. There are always those who as is their nature and on general principles
pooh-pooh any new project. They are now amazed that it has finally happened.
As we celebrate the opening of the aquarium, we invite you to come learn
more about Lake Superior and the rest of the fresh-water wonders around
us. Visitation to our lake is growing and, with repositories of information
like the Great Lakes Aquarium, it will continue to increase in the years
to come.
We hope you never outgrow your need to learn more about fresh water and,
especially, Lake Superior. We’ll endeavor to always do our part to tell
you about the things that count (including the best travel information).
Lake Superior continues to be our guide to the future resource of fresh
water. And it’s a wonder to behold.
