Hanging with the Big Dogs

Huckleberry FinnSome girl named Irma sure made my people happy. They went away to Montana recently and came back very excited about the things that Irma gave them.

(Editor’s note on Huck’s behalf: IRMA - the International Regional Magazine Association - held its annual conference this year in Montana. Now back to Huck …)

Seems that Irma really liked Split Rock Lighthouse and our Senior Writer Hugh Bishop’s story about it. She gave Hugh and Lake Superior Magazine a Gold Award for Historical Feature for “Split Rock: Time’s Sentinel (August/September 2001). Hugh’s story kicked off our special Lighthouse Collector Editions that continued this August/September 2002 with a story about the Apostle Islands lighthouses. Next year: Michigan’s lights. Irma gave Hugh a gold in history last year, too, for his story on the 25th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald wreck (October/November 2000).

Gold from Irma is especially great because the other magazines have national and international reputations like Arizona Highways, Cottage Life and Wisconsin Trails. These are the Big Dogs in regional publishing. No wonder my people are pleased to have measured so well with them.

Two other of my people also got honors in Montana. My “grandpa,” Jim Marshall, earned an Award of Merit for his regular column “Lake Superior Journal.” Editor Konnie LeMay got an Award of Merit for Profiles with “Double Takes,” her story in the April/May 2001 issue about married photographers.

I got an award from Irma, too: A blue Montana bandanna that Mom (Publisher Cindy Hayden) and Dad (Associate Publisher Paul Hayden) brought me. It says: “If you can read this, start petting.” Feel free to follow those instructions!
