Imagine, if you will, that you’ve never before visited
the shores of Lake Superior, that you’ve never seen its glassy calm days
or heard its storms roar. How could we describe to you the beauty and the
mystery of the lake?
Luckily for us, this year’s photo contest generated entries from 175 photographers
submitting hundreds of examples that reveal life along these shores. Our
judges selected a few special pictures that speak 10,000 words about this
region. One sees the lake effect on the weathered face of a fisherman and
on the weather-coated hull of a vessel. It’s there, too, in the mist rising
from a lakeside forest and in the ephemeral strands of a waterfall. To
fathom the vastness of Lake Superior, compare its distant horizon to the
small figure contemplating Tee Harbour on a rocky outcrop. To understand
its isolation, view the lonely vigil of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse. The
lake spawns whimsy as well as wisdom, as one finds on a dive to an ironic
message in the chilly lake waters. And what could be more awesome than
to join a heron in flight?
For the first time this year, we found two “spot news” images recording
events on the lake. We’ve accorded them a special mention to share the
“news” with you.
The one thing that the judges could not find among the entries was that
special shot to meet the particular demands of a cover. Magnificent images
sometimes cannot fit words. Instead this year we’ve awarded two second-place
winners. The grand prize receives a $250 award featuring a lake region
travel package. First place earns a $150 prize that includes a Lake Superior
Collection gift certificate. The two second-place winners will receive
$50 prizes that feature a year’s subscription to Lake Superior Magazine
and
a 2003 Lake Superior calendar.
The Grand Prize winner is a stunningly lit view of a Lake Superior sentinel,
the Rock of Ages Lighthouse at Isle Royale National Park.
