The Lucky Dog’s Life

Huckleberry FinnNow that I’m into my lucky 13th year of age, lots of folks ask my advice about all sorts of things. I may not be able to learn new tricks - or so the saying goes - but I can teach others a trick or two about how to get the most out of life.

I’ve got five basics for good living:

One - start the day by going outside right away, no matter what the weather. Some days it’s hard to convince Dad or Mom to jump out of bed and run outside, but a few yips and nudges bring them around. While you’re outside, I suggest that you sniff the air and ground to see who’s visited. Deer or a fox? If it’s a fox, I put up a little fuss so that my sisters, those cats, know to watch their out-of-doors dainty steps on their jaunts.

Two - keep your water dish full. Since I’m a working dog, I have one dish at home and one in the office. You should do the same. (Two coffee cups work.) Of course, Lake Superior, is like an endless water dish never far away for those of us lucky enough to live by it. Imagine if it were coffee.

Three - eat at every opportunity. More opportunities will arise if you can develop a cute, fuzzy face.

Four - get in as many back rubs as you can. In between naps, I let people at work scratch my back or rub my tummy. I read that it lowers their blood pressure, so it’s the least I can do to help out my people. If you come by our office, I’ll help you, too.

Five - when you’re not sleeping, eating or drinking, I recommend that you walk or run beside Lake Superior. I prefer to go barefooted. Bring a toy along to chase. It’s good to bring friends and family with you. They can throw the toys. Or you can all run along the shore and chase the waves or bark at the birds.

There’s so much in life that makes it lucky even when you’re 13.
