Lake Superior Magazine

Editor’s Note
by Konnie LeMay

Landmark, Ahoy!

Konnie LeMayFrom my office window, I’m lucky enough to look out onto Lake Superior. As I watch the ever-changing, always-inspiring moods of this sea-sized body of water, I’ve come to several revelations.

Something huge can also be intimate. Something timeless can also be momentary. Something without a voice can speak quite clearly.

Watching the lake calms and heals, even during its most powerful tempers. (Just a note here to my publisher: I do spend more time - most days - watching my Macintosh computer rather than the lake, so don’t worry about that window thing.)

I believe the world would be a better place if all of our offices and homes looked out onto Lake Superior. Now, for the lake and the sake of overcrowding, that wouldn’t be such a good idea, but it is something of the idea behind why we published Lake Superior Magazine. We want to bring the lake and an understanding of it to you … even if you live right next to it. Or as we say in our mission statement: “We will work to be the eyes, ears and voice of Lake Superior and its peoples, revealing the mystique of the lake through quality writing, graphics and photography.”

For 25 years, this has been our mission. In this issue, we celebrate our landmark year by tapping landmark photographers like Craig Blacklock, Jay Steinke and Richard Olsenius, landmark authors like the late Grace Lee Nute and some landmark events like the 1913 storm (the worst ever on the Great Lakes). We take a peek back 25 years to compare then with now around the lake, and we chat with Jim Marshall, our chairman, about the past, present and future of the magazine. We’ve also packed in what we do each issue, things like fun advice in our recreation guide and travel sections about activities to enjoy around the entire circle of Lake Superior, a recipe from local chef Arlene Coco and an introduction to a woman whose lakeside home renovations blend comfortably with the environment.

In our “View•Point,” we introduce you to us - the crew of Lake Superior Magazine. Now that you know us a little better, we’d love to get to know you.

That is why I extend my personal invitation to your person (and any persons whom you’d like to bring) to our 25th Anniversary open house at our sixth-floor office in the Waterfront Plaza building (325 Lake Avenue South) from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 2. It’s a time for us to say “Thanks!” to all those who made it possible to attain a silver anniversary - all of our supporters, our newsstand operators, our advertisers and our readers.

We hope to bring Lake Superior to you for the next 25 years (and more). This is the best (and most environmentally sound) way, after all, to export this greatest Great Lake.

Looking forward to seeing you here.

Thanks!
