Sometimes,
you just have to be there. Sometimes, somebody who was there brings
back a photograph so finely done that you feel like you are there and,
perhaps, wish you had been there.
That is the consistent quality of the top winners and many of
the honorable mentions of this 11th Annual Lake Superior Photo Contest.
Colleen Kumrow, this year’s Grand Prize winner, froze with
skill that magic autumn time at Bond Falls near Paulding, Michigan,
when those who have never seen it swear that these colors aren’t real.
They are.
While Colleen chose a great time (and great focus and
settings) for her image, First Prize winner Margaret Arko and Second
Prize winner David Kohne took photographic advantage of the right
moments. Margaret got eye-to-camera with a chipmunk stealing food from
a bear-bait site. Too small for a bear hunter, it was the perfect
“prey” for Margaret’s visual hunt. David went high up on a Duluth,
Minnesota, boulevard to snap the big picture during a big storm.
For her work, Colleen will receive the Grand Prize of a $250
travel and Lake Superior Collection package. First Prize receives a
$100 Lake Superior Collection package and Second Prize earns a $50
package that includes a one year subscription to the magazine and a
2006 Lake Superior calendar.
This year we received more than 150 entries and more than
1,000 images to review. The images ranged from dramatic to whimsical.
Reviewing all of them, we quickly discovered that the most important
function of great photography is to get out and experience the great
scenery and recreation of this Great Lake.
Special this year, additional honorable mention images can be found in our 2006 Lake Superior Travel Guide
now available. Thank you to all of those who entered. Keep shooting and
remember to get your new entries in to us by October 23, 2006, at P.O.
Box 16417, Duluth, MN 55816-0417.
