For
this, the 13th annual go around of the Lake Superior Photo Contest, we
challenged our photographers to think about three different categories:
Lake/Landscapes, People and Nature.
What we got from our more than 150 entries with
nearly 1,000 images was a world of witty and wonderful pictures that
reflects the entire life of our Lake Superior region.
Our Grand Prize winner this year – Larry
Dunlap’s Gooseberry Falls on page 33 – will get a $200 award along with
a one-year subscription to Lake Superior Magazine and a 2008
Lake Superior Calendar. Larry’s image got a unanimous thumbs-up from
the judges impressed with its clarity, detail and timelessness.
The sharpness and composition, mirroring the
loon in the water, earned Thomas Ling his First Place in Nature. It’s a
delicate subject and requires great care by photographers.
For First Place in the Lake/Landscape category, the drama of Hancock, Michigan, at night was captured perfectly by Jason Funkey.
Pure surprise – and we are assuming that no
swimmers were injured in the making of this picture – drew the judges’
attention to the First Place winner in the People category by Michael
Lenz.
Our three First Place winners in each category will get the year’s subscription and the calendar.
Our thanks to all of those who entered in this
year’s contest, making it pleasantly difficult to narrow the choices to
those seen on these pages. We encourage you to make pictures all year
and remember to send your best to us by the October 20, 2008, deadline
for the 14 annual contest.
Details about the contest, how to send your images and an entry form will be found online at www.lakesuperior.com.
Or you can send us a self-address stamped envelope for a copy of the rules and entry form to:
