Behind the Pages
From Our Office
This is it!
Our 30th Anniversary Bash begins in July and goes through August. We’ll
be kicking off our party the same week as the annual Lake Superior Day,
so take a look below for some specific dates and then keep an eye on
our website for details as the dates draw nearer.
Longtime subscribers will notice something different about
the issue that you are receiving in the mail: It did not come in a
polybag. We have heard from readers and have wanted to reduce waste, so
we’ve eliminated the bag. Issues that have extra items – like the free
Lake Superior Travel Guide for subscribers – will still come in the
bag. Let us know if your magazine does not arrive in tip-top condition
by calling 218-722-5002, 888-BIG LAKE (888-244-5253), or e-mail circ@lakesuperior.com.

Worthy Causes
Animal
Allies in Duluth just opened a state-of-the-art facility at 4006
Airport Road. The new digs, which include updated features to keep
adoption-available animals healthy and safe, can handle 42 dogs and 54
cats. Adoptions are already up, thanks to the new home, says Executive
Director Jim Filby Williams. “The main reason is that the prior
facility was acutely unpleasant for people to be in and this (place) is
the very opposite.” How pleasant is it? At the recent open house, Jim
saw a little girl in tears and assumed she either had to give up a pet
for adoption or was being told she couldn’t get a pet. But no, Jim
says, as her parents explained, “she loved the building so much, she
wanted to live here.” Nice as the new place is, the dogs and cats would
rather live in “forever” homes (maybe with you?). The current needs for
the organization are additional volunteers to walk and play with
animals and clean and donations to cover neutering costs. If you can
help, go to www.animalallies.net or call 218-722-5341.
