Lake Superior Magazine Day Proclamation

City of Duluth, Office of the Mayor
Proclamation

Proclamation of Lake Superior Magazine DayWhereas, A magazine called Lake Superior Port Cities was launched during hard economic times in Duluth in 1979 to promote the beauty and positive aspects of Up North life along Lake Superior: and

Whereas, An “excursion” from Duluth’s harbor into Lake Superior in 1986 “discovered” in the water a name and focus change of the publication to Lake Superior Magazine, emphasizing the connections of people in Duluth and around the three states and province bordering Lake Superior; and

Whereas, Cindy Marshall Hayden and Paul Hayden have used their work and now ownership of the magazine to promote this community and have accepted multiple service roles on boards, organizations and committees for Duluth as well as statewide and nationally; and

Whereas, Lake Superior Magazine has served, as its mission states, “as the eyes, ears and voice of Lake Superior and its peoples;” and

Whereas, Lake Superior Magazine has beaten the usual magazine survival odds (9 of 10 startups fail within the first decade) and comes to celebrate not 10, not 20, but 30 years (and beyond, we hope) of publishing; and

Whereas, Since the magazine was started in 1979, people have said that Lake Superior is 10,000 years old … so technically the Lake must be 10,030 this year!

Now, therefore, I, Don Ness, Mayor of the City of Duluth, do officially proclaim July 16, 2009, as

Lake Superior Magazine Day
in the City of Duluth

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Duluth to be affixed in the city of Duluth this sixteenth day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand nine.

Don Ness, mayor
