Worthy Causes

It’s memories and time that the Lake Superior Maritime Collection craves. The impressive archives relating to the maritime industry and activity is now housed at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the newly remodeled Jim Dan Hill Library under the oversight of Associate Professor Laura Jacobs.

Those with maritime experience could help catalog items or remember the collection when you find maritime-related documents, photos or paperwork in family estates. Don’t judge receipts, tickets or such as throwaways, urges Laura. Just donate the materials and let the archivists do the sorting. “The items we consider mundane in our daily life can become windows into the past when placed in a museum,” says the collection’s "guide to donating."

Among items of interest: letters, diaries, memoirs, scrapbooks, photos, company newsletters, posters, brochures, ticket stubs, seamen’s papers, speeches, business records/reports, legal documents, logbooks, statistics, films, video/audio tapes, etc. Contact Laura Jacobs at ljacobs@uwsuper.edu, 715-394-8359 or go to www3.uwsuper.edu/maritime.
