LSM Wins Four 2013 MN SPJ Awards
Lake Superior Magazine took home four awards – including three first-place honors – June 18 from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists' Page One Awards.
“Lake Superior Magazine conveys much of what regional magazines do best: a strong sense of place; thoughtful, energetic writing; and engaging photography,” judges said in choosing Lake Superior Magazine’s February/March 2012 issue for first place as Best Issue.
In awarding “Seven Great Fall Drives” by Bob Berg with first place as Best Magazine Service Package, the judges wrote: “First-rate service package made even better through the use of beautiful photos and maps. Chocked full of colorful details and news-you-can-use when considering beautiful drives around or near Lake Superior. A handy reference guide for natives and visitors alike. Nicely done!”
The magazine took first place and third place in the Best Magazine Feature category, with “My Week with a Superior Sentinel” by Kyle Underwood earning first place and “Wild About Weather” by Konnie LeMay taking third place.
About “My Week,” judges commented: "Starting with a clever lede and augmented by his lovely photographs, the author draws a vivid picture of what it's like to be a summertime 'keeper' of a very unusual landmark. Descriptive writing offers a strong sense of place and easily keeps the reader engaged to the very last graph. His love for this remote sentinel and his enthusiasm for its history is charmingly contagious. Sign me up.”
