"Overlook on Oberg Mountain," Minnesota - Vic Torrel, Virginia, MinnesotaBare feet, babies, dogs and gulls … and lots of Lake Superior … were among the most repeated subjects (yes, bare feet) in the 240 entries with more than 1,700 images submitted this year. But you can see from the variety of subjects here that photographers got around the Big Lake and into some fun activities and stunning landscapes.
Clarity, composition and color topped the criteria by which we judged the images, along with an eye for a new way of seeing a familiar subject … like the First Place Lake/Landscapes in which Wade Weidner’s use of people emphasizes the vast scenery at the Log Slide.
The sharpness of the waves coupled with the decisive-moment composition and the young sailor’s expression earned Jennifer Dalquist a Grand Prize win and the $200 top prize.
Cameras Ready?First Place in People/Humor also captured that just-right instance in Mark Huttemier’s photo highlighting the interaction of a toddler, a wet retriever and Lake Superior.
First Place in Nature by Diane Hilden has a meditative quality expressing the beauty of this mystical region.
We’ve also spread the Photo Contest wealth to other pages this issue. See if you can find the Special Honor Black & White image by Kenji Ogura and the Honorable Mention images by Phillip Juntti, Jamey Penney-Ritter and Judy Peres. The contest information is in the photo descriptions.
All winners get a one-year subscription to Lake Superior Magazine. First Place winners get a wall-sized Lake Superior Calendar and a Lake Superior Collection gift package, while Second Place gets a mini calendar.
Start thinking now about what you’ll send for the 16th Annual Lake Superior Photo Contest.
The categories will stay the same - People/Humor, Nature and Lake/Landscapes - and you can still submit only 10 images total.
