Thunder Bay Art Gallery 1080 Keewatin St., Thunder Bay, Ontario P7B 6T7, Canada
In War and Deception, artist Sam Shahsahabi presents complex narratives: The ecological destruction of land through bitumen extraction, the implications of embargos, and the true cost of collateral damage. The exhibition runs Jan. 10 to Feb. 23 at Thunder Bay Art Gallery, and is curated by Nadia Kurd. An artist talk and reception will be Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7:30 p.m. From layered paintings to modified oil drums with drawing machines, Sam's art makes us question our own relationships to distant wars and their immediate consequences. Sam was born in Iran and obtained his degrees from Azad University in Tehran and York University in Toronto. He has been teaching painting and drawing at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay since 2009, where he is an assistant professor. He also specializes in public art and kinetic and mechanical installation. For more information, call 807-577-6427, or go to www.theag.ca. Hours are Tuesday to Thursday noon to 8 p.m., and Friday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
