History in a Pint: “Saving Pilot Bush"
to
Carmody Irish Pub & Brewing 308 E. Superior St., Duluth, Minnesota 55802
Veterans Memorial Hall's local history discussion series History in a Pint presents “Saving Pilot Bush” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Carmody Irish Pub and Brewing. Mike Zeman of Duluth will tell some of the stories of his father, E.M. Marvin Zeman, a crewman on the submarine USS Finback during World War II. The Finback sailed a dozen successful combat missions in the Pacific Theater, wreaking havoc on Japanese transport. Among the missions was a very important one historically: the rescue of a little known Navy pilot, George H.W. Bush, after he had been shot down and ditched in the ocean. He would later become our 41st president.
The event is free and open to the public. We advise guests to park in the parking ramp behind and connected to the Sheraton Hotel Duluth, across the street from Carmody’s.
Veterans Memorial Hall was established in 1910 and is a joint program of the St. Louis County Historical Society and the military service veterans of northeastern Minnesota with a mission to gather, preserve, interpret, and promote the rich and diverse human experiences of veterans, their families and communities, through museum, archival and educational programs. Its website, www.vets-hall.org, features more than 7,000 veteran stories.
