What the Proceeds from this Race Benefit
The UW-Superior Veteran and Nontraditional Center and the Douglas County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund are the two causes where 100% of this race's proceeds will go.
The Soldier and Sailor Relief Fund (SSRF) is an act that passed the Wisconsin State Legislature on April 2, 1887 to ensure that "no honorably discharged Soldier, Sailor, or Marine [would] be sent to a poorhouse". This act is what led way to the 1935 establishment of a County Veteran Service Officer in each Wisconsin county. Douglas County currently staffs two full time persons in their Veterans Service Office, who serve more than 4,000 veterans. Through the utilization of the SSRF they are able to help our local Veterans with small expenses such as gas cards, all the way up to a month's rent to a Veteran in need.
In the fall of 2012 UW-Superior opened the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) to provide programming in support of student success for our veteran and/or nontraditional students. The Center serves 35% of the undergraduate enrollment each term including veterans, students with children, current military service members, dependents or spouses of veterans, married students, and students 25 years or older. Over 5% of all our undergraduates are veteran/military students. The VNSC strives to enhance the student experience by connecting them on their educational journey at UW-Superior. The Center is a place on campus for students to relax, do homework, seek advisement, or visit with one of the many outreach service professionals that provide on-sight support services. Also, Success Net will pair you with a fellow veteran and/or nontraditional student who knows the ropes -- the campus, community, services, events, how to get connected and more.
