Wisconsin's oldest running marathon, the Paavo Nurmi Marathon is known for the course that runs through forests and fields, along rivers and lakes, numerous hills and elevation changes and passing a cemetery or two.
Beginning in the quiet village of Upson, Wisconsin for the past 45 years and finishing on Hurley's Famous Silver Street, participants are greeted and encouraged along the way by hundreds of volunteers.
Friday, August 8, brings race packet pick-up and the carbo-loading spaghetti feed that evening along with the Paavo Kids Race starting at 5:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. the Show Your Colors 5K Walk/Run will be at the Hurley School. At the Iron Horse Trailhead, downtown Hurley, the Torch Lighting ceremony will commence at 7 p.m. Post Paavo Party will be held downtown Hurley with live music by the Teds starting at 2 p.m. DJ music will be provided from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. provided by DJ Al Rice. Face painting and balloon sculptures from Fun E Business from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
