Thirty years ago, feminist performance group the Guerrilla Girls banded together to call attention to the biases inherent in the history of art and evident in the collections of many of the most famous art museums. Two founding members of the Guerrilla Girls will be in Duluth and will perform a public gig at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Several local art and cultural institutions are staging a series of events in honor of the Guerilla Girls. The Duluth Art Institute is offering a free open studio for art/propaganda making from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, January 14, at the Lincoln Building (2229 West 2nd Street), followed by a one-night pop-up exhibition of work dedicated to taking down 'the man' on Friday, January 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Events at Gimaajii Galleries, PrØve and the Building for Women Plaza, and the Red Herring Lounge will follow. The free Guerrilla Girls Gig will be on Saturday, January 16, at Weber Music Hall, UMD, starting at 11 a.m. The Guerilla Girls perform in gorilla masks to protect their identities as they ask critical feminist questions.
