The presentation will cover the traditional way of community membership, the history of blood quantum, the changes that were made in the 1960’s and its effects, and the current efforts of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe constitution reform Committee.
Presenter: Michele Hakala-Beeksma is enrolled member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. She has worked at the 1854 Treaty Authority for almost 20 years, has been a delegate on the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Constitution reform committee since 2019 and is on the St. Louis County Historical Society Board of Governors and American Indian Advisory Committee.
