Dog Days of Winter Fun (DDWF) is returning to Trail Center Lodge Saturday, March 12 – Sunday, March 13, 2016. DDWF is a two-day family-friendly outdoor event featuring a variety of dog sled races, snowman building contests, snow sculptures and skijoring races located halfway up the Gunflint Trail on Poplar Lake and bonfire with smores, hot dogs and hot cocoa.
Visitors can participate in the Sled Dog Derbies, which include an eight-dog, 23-mile run, a six-dog, 12-mile run, and a four-dog, three-mile run. All derbies start at 11 a.m. and cost $20-$40 to register depending on the event.
Freestyle skijoring (skate skiing or classic skiing) includes a two-mile and five-mile race open to all experience levels. Poplar Lake will be groomed for the events, but will not have set tracks. Skijoring costs $10-$15 depending on the race and begins at 2 p.m.
A snow sculpture will be carved at the event. If interested in carving one, they have two or three extra forms for someone to utilize.
Participants in the activities, as well as spectators are welcome to join in the snowman competition and bonfire activities FREE of charge.
