Lake Superior Marine Museum & Maritime Visitor Center 600 South Lake Avenue, Duluth, Minnesota 55802
This week the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Duluth will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the loss of the passenger steamer Eastland with a pictorial display and the 37-minute video “Remember the Eastland.” On July 24, 1915, in Chicago, the passenger steamer rolled over at the dock and 844 passengers and crew were lost, and it remains the greatest loss of life in Great Lakes maritime history. Here's the schedule for the Eastland video and other summer programs at the visitor center, July 20 to 26:
• 12:45 p.m.: "Duluth-Superior: The Great Lakes Port," an introduction to the overall shipping activities of the Twin Ports with a focus on vessels and cargos, a 13-minute video.
• 1:45 p.m.: "Remember the Eastland,” a documentary that examines the greatest shipwreck of the Great Lakes, a 37-minute video.
• 2:45 p.m.: "Ore Boat," showing a ride to the lower lakes on the 1,000-foot bulk carrier Edwin H. Gott with a load of taconite, a 20-minute video.
• 3:45 p.m.: "Remember the Eastland," a documentary that examines the greatest shipwreck of the Great Lakes, a 37-minute video.
An outside program runs Thursday to Monday at 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. (weather permitting): "Pier History Tour" explores the history of Canal Park on a 30-minute walk into the past.
