Guided Snowshoe Hikes at Porcupine Mountains
to
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park 33303 Headquarters Rd., Ontonagon, Michigan 49953-9087
Guided snowshoe hikes are offered on Saturdays in January, including January 19 and 26, at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park near Silver City, Michigan. Through a new partnership between the park and Gogebic Community College, participants are able to take a ski lift up, then snowshoe down the east side of the ski area. The group will stop at East Vista to take in the view, then trek through untouched snow on the way down. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera. The hikes are one and a half to two hours long and are moderately difficult, although participants of all skill levels are welcome. Those who wish to attend should meet at 1 p.m. at the log cabin between the open slope and the chalet near the hill. A map is available online with directions. Snowshoes are available for use at the park, and anyone who needs to borrow snowshoes should plan to arrive early. If the weather is not favorable for snowshoeing, the event may be canceled. Call the park at 906-885-5206 to ask about possible cancellations. This event is free; however a Recreation Passport is required for entry to the park.
