HERMANTOWN AND THE 1918 FIRE PROGRAM AT MUSEUM
The Carlton County Historical Society presents its September event about the Great 1918 Fire with a program by Connie Jacobson about the community of Hermantown, Minnesota, during the 1918 Fire on Sunday, September 9 at 1 p.m. at the CCHS museum in Cloquet.
Jacobson, a local historian and author, grew up in Hermantown hearing family stories about the 1918 forest fires. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and the U of M, Minneapolis, she worked for the St. Louis County Court System until her retirement. Now she is active in several local historical societies and writes a local history column for the Hermantown Star newspaper. Connie currently lives in Esko with her three dogs and her husband.
Earlier this year, Jacobson published a book called, Hellfire In Hermantown: The 1918 Forest Fires and How They Affected Hermantown. She will discuss the research for this book and describe the devastation that took place in Hermantown during the 1918 fire. Copies of her autographed book will be available for sale.
After the program, visitors can view the museum's extensive exhibit about the 100th year commemoration of the Great 1918 Fire. Refreshments will be served. Regular admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children under 12, and free admission for children under 5 and Carlton County Historical Society members. The museum is handicapped accessible and air conditioned. For more information, contact the Carlton County Historical Society at 218-879-1938.
