For Lake Superior Day, Port Wing, Wisconsin, is once again hosting a day to celebrate our great Lake Superior. This event will be on Saturday, July 20, at the Port Wing Town Hall in the morning and the Marina in the afternoon. Lake Superior is celebrated around the entire lake on this week-end in July. The activities begin with the Saturday Market, open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and displays in the Town Hall as well. At 9:30 a.m., Thom Holden, retired director of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Duluth, will speak about shipwrecks on Lake Superior. At 10:30 a.m., Rick Burkman, a tour leader and speaker at the Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival and retired coordinator of the Chequamegon Bay Birders, will speak on “Hope”…is the Thing With Feathers." Then, at 11:30 a.m., Brittany Merlot, Fox 21 TV meteorologist, will speak about rising water levels, the lake and weather it creates, climate change, etc. There will be a fish boil from 12:30-2:30 p.m. by Eric “Smokey” Johnson. At 1:30 p.m., there will be a walking tour of the cemetery, telling stories about resting fishermen. Change of gears: At 3 p.m., there will be live music at the marina with hot dogs, s’mores and refreshments available; a free-will donation is asked with proceeds to go for Port Wing projects. Stargazing and a bonfire will end the evening events.
