Larry Luukkonen Program at Museum

The Carlton County Historical Society welcomes guest speaker Larry Luukkonen presenting a program called "Mapping the St. Louis River" on Saturday, May 17, Armed Forces Day, at 1 p.m. at its museum in Cloquet, Minnesota.

Luukkonen, born and raised in Cloquet, now lives in McGregor, Minnesota. He received his M.A. degree in History at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and taught history at Bemidji State University. A prolific author of Northern Minnesota history, Luukkonen's three books available at the museum include A Hometown Album: Cloquet's Centennial Story, Reuben B. Carlton: Frontier Blacksmith and Visionary, and Cloquet: the Story Behind the Name.

Luukkonen's program, "Mapping the St. Louis River," complements the museum's current exhibit "65 Treasures," which celebrates the 65th anniversary of the Carlton County Historical Society. Featured in the exhibit is a 1935 map of Carlton County and a map of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Refreshments will be served following the program. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12 and free for children under 5, CCHS members and past and present members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The museum is handicapped accessible. For more information call the CCHS at 218-879-1938.
