Author Michael Resman
Carlton County Historical Society 406 Cloquet Avenue, Cloquet, Minnesota 55720
On Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m., author Michael Resman from Rochester, Minnesota, will present a program at the Carlton County Historical Society at 406 Cloquet Avenue in Cloquet.
Resman, a retired occupational therapist for the Rochester State Hospital, recently wrote a book called Asylums, Treatment Centers and Genetic Jails: A History of Minnesota's State Hospitals. His book includes information about the Moose Lake State Hospital, when it was a treatment center for the mentally ill in Carlton County. Resman will discuss the Moose Lake facility in the broader context of the comprehensive history of Minnesota's treatment of people with mental illness, including the good intentions and the unfortunate lack of dignity and respect for many patients. Resman's book will be available for sale the day of the program.
Resman's program enhances the museum's current exhibit called "65 Treasures of Carlton County", which includes photos and history of the Moose Lake State Hospital as a celebration of the Carlton County Historical Society's 65th birthday this year. Refreshments will be served after the program.
Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12 and no charge for children under 5 or CCHS members. As a Blue Star Museum, all active duty U.S. Military personnel and their families are offered free admission through Labor Day. The museum is handicapped accessible.
