Northwoods icon Dorothy Molter was most well-known for her homemade root beer available 15 miles from the nearest road at her home on the Isle of Pines located on Knife Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. “The Root Beer Lady” lived on Knife for 56 years operating a remote fishing resort that after the 1964 Wilderness Act had to cease operation as a business and evolved into simply “Dorothy’s.”
Although her root beer is known world-wide as a result of the hundreds of thousands of visitors Dorothy welcomed over the years, her life beyond her root beer is just as fascinating and filled with complexity. Discover Dorothy Molter, the woman before her time, as the layers of her inspiring life are peeled back and shared through imagery and storytelling.
The Dorothy Molter Museum preserves and interprets Northwoods wilderness heritage through learning opportunities inspired by Dorothy Molter, the last non-indigenous resident of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and its vision is to inspire the next generation of Northwoods stewards to make a significant contribution toward a better world through Dorothy’s legacy of perseverance, integrity and generosity.
Presenter: Jess Edberg is a born-and-raised Minnesotan who thoroughly enjoys the outdoors year-round. She currently serves as the executive director of the Dorothy Molter Museum, is an adjunct natural resources instructor at Vermilion Community College, and a volunteer member of the Wolf Care Team at the International Wolf Center. She has two decades of experience as an educator both in the field and in the classroom, and serves/has served on several natural resource focused committees at the state and federal level. Most of her free time includes exploring the Northwoods with her spouse and two chocolate labs.
Thank you to the Dorothy Molter Museum for their partnership on this event. https://www.rootbeerlady.com/
