Stories of the North: Women of the Boundary Waters, presented by Jessy Carlson
We will share stories of the women who have lived and worked in the area now called the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, starting with the earliest stories passed on to us, through the era of fishing resorts and logging and into the present. Feel free to share your own stories of women who contributed, or continue to contribute, to the human history of the Arrowhead Region.
Jessy will also be presenting an Introduction to Storytelling (Stories of the North) with an overview of the importance of storytelling. Most importantly, we will talk about how the stories we tell shape our perceptions of who belongs to a place, and who belongs in our communities. Storytelling is power, and one way humans have exerted power over others is by controlling the stories we tell about who we are and how we came to be. Telling everyone's stories not only gives us a more accurate picture of the world; it also helps to address systemic power imbalances.
