The Marquette Regional History Center presents: Houghton – The Birthplace of Professional Hockey.
Presented by MTU professor Bill Sproule. Hockey may be Canada's game, but a Houghton dentist and entrepreneur became promoters for hockey's first professional league. The International Hockey League lasted three years (1904-1907) but during its run, some of the best players of that era represented teams from Houghton, Calumet, Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan), Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario) and Pittsburgh in the league. This presentation will explore the teams and famous players, as well as how this league was founded. $5 suggested donation at the door.
