Cooler days, changing leaves and a packed calendar of festivals mean fall is officially arriving around Lake Superior. From art and culture to apples, plaid and plenty of autumn fun, the next few weeks offer plenty of reasons to hit the road around the Big Lake.
Here are four fall celebrations — one from each corner of Lake Superior — worth adding to your calendar.
Minnesota: Art Along the Lake
Sept. 25–Oct. 4 | Cook County
Fall color and North Shore creativity come together during the annual Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour.
The 10-day, self-guided tour stretches from Tofte and Grand Marais to Grand Portage and the Gunflint Trail, inviting visitors into studios and galleries to meet artists, see their work and get a glimpse of the creative process. Participating locations are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., making it easy to pair a day of art with a fall drive along the North Shore.
Ontario: Ontario Culture Days
Sept. 18–Oct. 4 | Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay celebrates the arts this fall as one of Ontario Culture Days' 2026 Festival Hubs.
The province-wide celebration runs Sept. 18 through Oct. 4, with free arts and cultural experiences taking place in communities across Ontario. Thunder Bay's programming highlights the city's artists, performers, Indigenous heritage and multicultural community, offering another way to experience the region beyond the fall scenery.
Wisconsin: Bayfield Apple Festival
Oct. 2–4 | Bayfield
Few Lake Superior traditions say fall quite like the Bayfield Apple Festival.
Now in its 64th year, the three-day celebration brings the fall harvest to downtown Bayfield with apple orchard events, food and craft vendors, live music, a carnival and plenty of opportunities to sample the season's crop. The weekend culminates Sunday with the festival's Grand Parade down Rittenhouse Avenue.
Michigan: Canal Colors Festival
Oct. 1–3 | Houghton
The Keweenaw goes all-in on autumn during Houghton's Canal Colors Festival, set against the fall-covered hills surrounding the Portage Canal.
The celebration rolls several local traditions into one big weekend, including Plaidurday festivities, Brew Street, the Keweenaw Color Run and Houghton Fall Fest. Look for live music, fall activities and plenty of plaid as downtown Houghton celebrates one of the U.P.'s most colorful times of year.
Celebrate Fall Around the Big Lake
Whether you're wandering North Shore art studios, celebrating culture in Thunder Bay, sampling the apple harvest in Bayfield or breaking out the plaid in Houghton, fall festival season offers plenty of excuses to explore another corner of Lake Superior.
Pick a destination, hit the road and enjoy the season around the Big Lake.
